Ethiopian forces re-enter Adigrat after days of drone strikes on withdrawing Eritreans

Updated

Three residents of Adigrat told Reuters that Ethiopian government forces and allied militia entered the city on Saturday morning, 10 October. One described soldiers on patrol with military vehicles. Reuters says it verified video showing militia members walking the city's streets.

This follows the sequence already recorded here: residents described Eritrean soldiers moving through Adigrat on 7 October; ACLED reported Ethiopian drone strikes against Eritrean vehicles on the Adigrat-Idaga Hamus road; and AFP and ACLED separately reported on 8 October that those forces had withdrawn north. This record adds the next link — Ethiopian forces physically occupying the town two days after the reported withdrawal — and a new detail: ACLED's account of the withdrawal describes explosions near Adigrat on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (7-9 October), not a single incident.

We treat "entered the city" and "controls the city" as different claims. Reuters' residents describe soldiers on patrol and video of militia in the streets, which is short of a claim that the town is secured or that fighting has ended in the area.

Observations

What the evidence shows

What we see

The sourced claim is that forces "entered" the city and that residents saw soldiers "on patrol" and militia "walking" its streets. No source we hold states that the town is secured, that fighting nearby has stopped, or that the force that entered is large enough to hold it.

What it is consistent with

This sequence — presence reported, strikes reported, withdrawal reported, re-entry reported, all within four days and all in the same small town — is a town changing hands under contest, not a settled front line. Treat any claim that Adigrat is now secure as a separate, unassessed proposition.

What complicates it

We have not seen the video ourselves and cannot independently confirm when it was filmed beyond Reuters' own account. "Entered the city" is not the same as "controls the city" or "fighting has ended here", and we make no claim about either.

What would change our mind

Contradicting resident accounts, dated imagery, or an Eritrean or TPLF statement disputing Ethiopian presence in the town.

Ethiopian drone strikes hit Eritrean vehicles withdrawing from positions near Adigrat on the nights of 7, 8 and 9 October.

Claimed by ACLED, as reported by Reuters · source rating B2

likely 55–80%

ACLED reports strikes against withdrawing Eritrean vehicles on three separate nights, not one.

What complicates it

This is a compilation from a research organisation's own monitoring, not a witness account, and we have not independently verified any single night's strike.

What would change our mind

A specific location and date we could check against satellite or thermal imagery.
