This is an army counting its enemy's dead and announcing the total itself. Al Jazeera, which reported it, says the figures cannot be independently verified. Armies routinely overstate enemy losses, and the precision of '272' is a presentation choice, not evidence. Heavy fighting in the area is well attested; the number is not.

What complicates it

Nobody can check this. There is no independent count, no hospital figure, and no monitor estimate from the area. Satellites cannot count casualties — it is not the kind of claim remote sensing can touch.

What would change our mind

An independent casualty estimate from ACLED or a similar monitor, hospital or burial reporting from North Wollo, or a TPLF statement acknowledging losses of a comparable order.
