Reported drone-related blast at Bishoftu air force headquarters

A drone strike was reported at Bishoftu around 27 September. Bishoftu hosts a major Ethiopian Air Force installation, which is the presumed reported target, though we have not established that. The Critical Threats Project is reported to have examined satellite imagery for this location and to have stated that alleged damage could not be independently corroborated in the low-resolution imagery available to it.

6.1 km across · Sentinel-2 (S2B) MSI L2A · 10.0 m per pixel · identical extent and scale

What this can and cannot show. Sentinel-2 true colour at 10 m per pixel, acquired 83.0 h after the reported event time. One pixel is roughly the footprint of a small building, so damage to an individual structure, a crater, or munition debris would not be resolved. This imagery could show a burn scar, a large destroyed or removed structure, a plume caught at the moment of overpass, or substantial change to fuel or vehicle areas. Absence of visible change therefore carries little information about whether a small strike occurred. For THIS incident the floor is decisive against the null meaning much: ACLED reports a blast being HEARD, with no fire or destruction claimed. A single munition detonation leaves nothing a 10 m sensor resolves.

Observations

What the evidence shows

What we see

Comparing the 24 and 29 September crops of the same extent, the runway, apron, taxiways, the row of hardened shelters and the buildings to the south all appear intact and unchanged. No burn scar, no collapsed structure, no disturbed ground. The 24 September scene carries cloud and cloud shadow over the centre-left of the frame, mostly over fields south-west of the runway; the airfield itself, including the apron and runway, is clear in both images.

What it is consistent with

Consistent with no large-area physical change at the airfield between the dates. Weakly informative at best: ACLED reports only that a blast was heard, and a munition detonation is far below what this sensor resolves. The cloud in the earlier scene also leaves part of the frame outside the comparison.

What we see

No FIRMS thermal detection at Harar Meda airfield on 26 September, on a day with confirmed VIIRS day and night passes over this latitude. The nearest detection on that date was 38.3 km away.

What it is consistent with

The sensors were looking and saw no fire. That carries much less weight here than at Kombolcha: no fire was ever claimed at Bishoftu, so the absence of one is not evidence against the report. It would only bear on the claim if a substantial fire had been alleged.

Assessments

Claim by claim

A possible drone-related blast was heard at the ENDF Air Force headquarters in Bishoftu on 26 September.

Claimed by ACLED (Dr Jalale Getachew Birru, East Africa Senior Analyst) · source rating B3

roughly even chance 45–55%

We hold nothing but an unattributed report reaching us through a secondary relay. The date is approximate and we have not identified any primary source.

What we checked, and what a blank result means

CTP's inability to corroborate damage in low-resolution imagery is NOT evidence that no strike occurred. At Sentinel-class resolution, a strike on a hardened or small target is expected to be invisible. Treat the negative as uninformative.

What would change our mind

A Sentinel-2 before/after pair showing a burn scar, destroyed aircraft on the apron, or damaged fuel infrastructure. A geolocated video. An Ethiopian Air Force or government statement. Sub-metre imagery via Maxar Open Data if activated.

Alleged damage at Bishoftu could not be independently corroborated in the low-resolution satellite imagery available to the Critical Threats Project.

likely 55–80%

A specific, cautious, self-limiting statement of the kind a careful analyst makes, attributed to a named research project. Held at 'likely' because we have not yet located the assessment itself.

What would change our mind

Reading the CTP assessment and finding it says something different, or finding no such assessment exists.
