Federal airstrikes reported on Axum and Shire

Updated

The Critical Threats Project reports that Ethiopian federal forces have conducted airstrikes on Adigrat, Adwa, Axum and Shire since 3 October, describing them as strikes on population centres held by the TPLF.

For Adwa and Sheraro we hold rather more: named hotels, a named part of a displacement camp, eyewitnesses to two separate news organisations, and casualty figures that cluster. Those are recorded separately.

For Axum and Shire we hold almost nothing beyond the names. No building, no date more precise than "since 3 October", no casualty figure, no witness, no denial. Axum is a city of around seventy thousand people and a UNESCO world heritage site; Shire is a town that has held displacement camps since the last war. Both are places where a strike would matter a great deal and where the absence of detail is itself notable.

We are publishing this because the gap is the story. A list of four town names in an analytical digest is how an airstrike enters the record when nobody can reach the town, and Tigray has been under a communications blackout since late September. That is not a reason to assert more than we have.

Observations

What the evidence shows

What we see

Four towns are named as struck in a single sentence. For two of them, Adwa and Sheraro, we separately hold eyewitness accounts to two news organisations, named buildings or a named part of a camp, and casualty figures from a humanitarian bulletin. For the other two, Axum and Shire, we hold the name and nothing else: no date within the window, no location, no number, no witness, no denial.

What it is consistent with

The same sentence carries claims of very different evidential weight, and a reader scanning it would not know which was which. That is the ordinary condition of reporting from a region nobody can telephone, not a failing of the source. It does mean these two towns sit at the level of "reported somewhere, by someone" and should be read that way until a person, a building or a date is attached to either.

One research organisation lists both towns among four struck since 3 October. Two of the other towns on that list are separately corroborated; these two are not.

What complicates it

A town name in a list, with no date, no building, no casualty figure and no witness. Tigray has been under a communications blackout since late September, which is the most likely reason the detail is missing — and is also why we cannot treat the absence of contradiction as support.

What would change our mind

Any account from either town, a dated photograph, a casualty figure, an ENDF statement, or a specific location within either place.

Critical Threats Project Africa File, 8 October 2026. States that the Ethiopian federal army "has reportedly conducted strikes on Adigrat, Adwa, Axum, and Shire since October 3", describing them as supplementing ground operations with airstrikes on population centres held by the TPLF. The same passage carries the separately corroborated detail on Adwa, where strikes on the night of 4 to 5 October damaged multiple hotels and killed nine, and on Sheraro, where Reuters reported eight killed the same night.
