Drone strikes on hotels in Adwa

Updated

Drone strikes hit several locations in Adwa on the nights of Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October. A resident told Addis Standard that the Shewit International, Pan Africa, Soloda and Segenet hotels were among the places struck. ACLED's alert for 4 October independently names the Soloda among the targets. An aid worker confirmed strikes in Adwa to Reuters.

On the toll the sources diverge. A humanitarian bulletin relayed by Reuters records at least nine killed in Adwa. A resident told Addis Standard the figure could be as high as nine. Reuters says it could not independently confirm the full reports, and Addis Standard says the same.

What nobody explains is why hotels. The reporting offers no stated reason, and we are not going to supply one: a hotel in a town at war can hold displaced families, aid staff, fighters or guests, and which of those was there is exactly what none of our sources establishes. Satellite imagery of Adwa is clear for 2 October but 32 per cent obscured afterwards, and a damaged hotel facade is in any case below what ten-metre imagery resolves.

Observations

What the evidence shows

What we see

Four hotels are named by a resident to Addis Standard: Shewit International, Pan Africa, Soloda and Segenet. ACLED's 4 October alert names two: Soloda and Snit. The Soloda appears in both. The Snit appears in neither the resident's list nor anywhere else we hold.

What it is consistent with

One building named independently by two sources is the strongest single element in this record, and it is worth more than the town being named by several. The mismatch on the other names is not evidence against the strikes; lists gathered at night in a town under attack are rarely identical, and transliteration varies. It does mean the record supports "hotels including the Soloda were struck" rather than any particular list of four.

A resident named four hotels to Addis Standard, and ACLED separately names the Soloda among the targets. An aid worker confirmed strikes in the town to Reuters.

What complicates it

Anonymous accounts from a region under a communications blackout. No photographs. ACLED's second named hotel does not match the resident's list, so the two accounts agree on one building rather than four.

What would change our mind

Dated photographs of a named hotel, an owner or guest speaking on the record, or an Ethiopian statement about the targets.

At least nine people were killed in the Adwa strikes.

Claimed by A humanitarian bulletin relayed by Reuters; separately a resident's estimate to Addis Standard · source rating B3

roughly even chance 45–55%

A humanitarian bulletin and a resident both land on nine, but we cannot tell whether those are two counts or one number repeated.

What complicates it

Nobody has counted independently. One account calls nine an upper estimate; the other calls it a floor. Casualty figures in the same reporting also disagree about which town carries which total.

What would change our mind

A hospital or agency figure for Adwa specifically, or any source that counts rather than estimates.
