The original Reuters report of 1 October, frozen in syndication. On the northern war it states that an opposition alliance led by the TPLF has battled federal forces since the previous week; that the clashes 'mark the biggest escalation of fighting in Ethiopia since the end of a 2020-2022 civil war in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed'; that federal forces have been advancing in southern Tigray, 'edging closer to the regional capital Mekelle', while the opposition alliance has captured towns in Afar; that pro-government forces recaptured Erbeti in Afar, with the TPF militia thanking the ENDF for 'magnificent air support'; and that in Afar fighting has forced tens of thousands to flee their homes, per Valerie Browning of the Afar Pastoralist Development Association.
