Criticalthreats
Critical Threats Project Africa File, 8 October 2026. States that AFP and ACLED each separately reported on 8 October that Eritrean forces in Adigrat had retreated northward; that a senior Ethiopian official told Reuters on 7 October that Eritrea had deployed one mechanised division and three infantry divisions of about 1,500 soldiers each; and that CTP "has been unable to find any large-scale Eritrean military buildup near the Ethiopia-Eritrea border in reviews of satellite imagery". Assesses the Eritrean role as advisory, logistics and light infantry support, possibly embedded in Tigrayan units, aimed at shoring up a buffer zone rather than invading.
